I think the term...the "ME" generation, was first coined in the late 1980's, and it still flourishes today in the year 2006. I think when a person had to pay for AIR for the vehicle tires...that's when the real greed began! Some places can't even offer free air, for your tires as a courtesy anymore! There used to be a time...during the Dark Ages a long time ago in the 199o'sl...when a person could get a document notarized for free in a bank...but, not anymore! In the CORPORATE WORLD OF GREED in the year 2006...all of us have to PAY to PLAY!
JAILS/PRISONS: All filled across the country with selfish/greedy people who want the easy way out. They steal; lie; write bad checks; commit fraud and no telling what else...to get THEIR way! All the people in jail or prison are NOT guilty of charges against them...it's always somebody else's fault that they're doing time, right? SELFISH/LIARS!
* CORPORATE GREED; Have you put gas in your tank, lately? Have you bought groceries , lately? Have you gone to a department store, and noticed the greed at the shopping mall lately? Have you saved much of anything for a rainy day? Same old broken record...GREED rules all across America! Unless you live in a cave someplace, you've heard of the Enron scandal, where thousands of workers lost their jobs and their life-time savings! Can any of us trust a corporation anymore? They're all in it...utilities; telephone companies; retail; groceries; pharmaceuticals are the worst behind big oil; banks; service companies...SELFISH AND GREEDY...all of them!
In a recent story in the newspaper...the Office of Senior Affairs reported that, a majority of the baby-boomers, eligible for retirement in the near future...will retire POOR! I believe it! A person can't survive with all the corporate greed around, and can't save much for the future or retirement, either! So, what else is new? (GREED!)
MEDICAL CARE (GREED): Enough to make you sick, right? Forgotten by the Congress (what Congress?), I have no idea what medical care costs these days. I'm fortunate that I am a veteran, and I get my medical and medication for free. But, what is disturbing to me, is the fact, that the Congress or the administration doesn't even address medical care in this country! If I had to pay for my medical care, I would be outraged!
* "IRRECONCILABLE DIFFERENCES:" In a divorce, that's a fancy term for selfishness in a marriage, in my view. I'm not a marriage counselor or sociologist, but I don't think a person has to be a rocket scientist, to see that marriage in this country continues to fail. The divorce rate remains high, and, I think its because of selfishness on both sides of the marriage, the husband AND the wife! Children learn to be selfish from their parents...so, add the selfish children to the formula and you have toxic mix for disaster! SELFISH!
* RUDE/SELFISH DRIVERS: (affects all of us) Does it get any worse, than driving around selfish drivers. who are a danger to everyone! And, the sad part about it...they seem to be everywhere! I live in Albuquerque, New Mexico, which has a metro population of about 500,000 residents, and about 130 schools in the district.
Many cities and schools, are using all the new technologies available to deal with traffic, like cameras and radar at intersections and school zines. There was a recent story in the newspaper, stating that the new technology was installed at one of the school zones, and a whopping 3,000 tickets were issued by police against speeders...all in just a weeks time! What will the numbers be, when the City and School District have this new technologies at all the intersections in the city and all the school in the district? Speeding drivers are dangerous; rude; inconsiderate and SELFISH!
A PERSONAL EXPERIENCE I SUFFERED THROUGH OF THE SELFISH...
SINGLES CLUB: I'm a member of a 600 member singles club, and the obvious purpose is for me to go out and enjoy myself, take a little wax off the dance floor...meet people, etc. One night, I was sitting at the bar, and a woman came over and sat next to me. We exchanged pleasantries, and if I could have looked into my crystal ball, to see what was coming...I would have never talked to her!
I shouldn't have given this woman so much of my time, but for the next 30 minutes, this woman started talking and talking and talking and talking and talking and talking about herself, her kids and since she was a school teacher...her students! (Whew!) Her little "getting acquainted" session was ONE big run-on sentence. And, I don't think this woman took a breath during this entire 30 minutes. She couldn't talk about HERSELF fast enough! DURING THIS TIME, I NEVER GOT IN A SINGLE WORD!
Talk about a motor-mouth! This woman was rude, inconsiderate and SELFISH! After this display, I got my drink and moved to another part of the club! And, as soon as I did...she turned to a fellow on the other side of her, and started on HIM! (poor fellow) I could see why this woman was single!
I've been in the humor business for over 40 years, and I have never had trouble making friends. If I make somebody laugh...I have a friend. But, as the selfishness in relations continues in this country, I don't make friends much anymore...and, that's by choice! MY life; My work; MY kids; My grandchildren; MY illnesses; MY illnesses; MY projects; MY materialism; MY can-opener; MY hair-dryer; MY window-shopping; MY crossword puzzle...MY fuzz-balls under the bed...MY...belly-aching; MY...
Because of this, I've distanced myself from people over the past few years! I have not become a recluse or a wall-flower in doing this, but I just don't want a lot of people around me anymore! People bring their problems with them...they whine about their despicable lives...and, as we all know...we'll all hear about their problems until the end of time! There are so many rude, inconsiderate and selfish people in the world, today!
Today...relationships (of any kind) are not what they used to be...friendships; neighbors; fellow employees; business; romance, and even some family! Un-selfish people are hard to find these days!
What ever happened to sharing? What ever happened to balance in a relationship? What ever happened to give and take in a relationship?
